The best thing of this recipe, it helps you reduce your kitchen waste and save money. Every time you have a stale bread, toss it with oil and herbs and bake it in the oven!

What kind of bread to use when making croutons?

Any type of savory bread will work like sourdough, sandwich bread, ciabatta bread, baguette, Rye, gluten-free.

Homemade Herby croutons pieces:

Ingredients:

  • 6 pieces of wholemeal bread
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • 3 pressed garlic gloves
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley, or you can use the dried parsley
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions:

1- Preheat oven to 230°C .Cut the day old bread into cubes using a kitchen scissor, and put them in a bowl.

2- in a pan, put the olive oil and the butter. Let the better melt then add the herbs and spices and stir for one minute until they combine.

3- drizzle the cubed bread with the oil and herbs mixture. Gently toss the bread with your hands or using a spoon until it’s lightly coated in oil.

4- spread the bread cubes out on a baking sheet and put them in oven.

5- bake until golden and crispy, flipping halfway through, about 10 minutes total.

6- Let it cool completely and store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks on the counter or for up to a month in the freezer.

Use these croutons to top a soup or salad. I made these croutons along with the creamy red lentils and mung beans soup. It was a hit for my entire family!

Note:

You can use a zipper bag for coating. Place the bread cubes into the bag, pour the oil/herbs mixture in, and gently shake. Dump everything onto a baking sheet, and bake.
