Looking for a simple game you can play with your kids almost anywhere?
The Name 3 Things Game is one of those easy activities that needs no setup, no special equipment and almost no explanation.
One person gives a prompt such as: “Name 3 animals that live in the ocean.”
Then the child has to quickly think of three answers. That’s it.
You can make it easy for younger children, harder for older kids, silly when everyone needs a laugh, or competitive by adding a short time limit.
It works well at home, in the car, while waiting somewhere, during family nights, or whenever your kids say, “I’m bored.”
It’s also one of the simplest things to create beautiful memories with your children without spending money.
In our family, we call it the 3 Words Game, but you may also know it as Name 3 Things or a version of the 5 Second Game.
In this post, I’ve put together 100+ Name 3 Things questions for kids, grouped into different categories so you can easily choose prompts that match your child’s age and mood.
And the best part? You can start playing immediately.
How to Play the Name 3 Things Game:
The rules are simple:
One person reads a prompt, such as: “Name 3 things that are yellow.”
The other player has to name three correct answers.
You can play with no timer at all, or make it more exciting by giving everyone 5–10 seconds to answer.
For younger children, keep the questions simple and give them extra thinking time.
For older kids, make the prompts harder or ask them to answer as quickly as possible.
You can play:
- one-on-one
- as a family
- in teams
- in the car
- during dinner
- while waiting somewhere
There is no need to keep score unless your kids enjoy the competitive side of it.
The main goal is simply to think quickly, talk, laugh and have fun together.

Ways to Make the Game More Fun:
You can make the Name 3 Things Game different every time you play it.
Try adding a timer, taking turns choosing the categories, playing in teams, keeping score, or letting the winner create the next question.
For younger children, give them extra thinking time. For older kids, make the questions harder or challenge them to answer in just five seconds.
You can also use the personality questions during quiet family time when you want the game to become more of a conversation than a competition.
